Escalante River Bridge A small pull-off here, just south of the Calf Creek Recreation Area, has views of "Moki Houses" - Anasazi granaries. Archaeologists originally through that these small structures were the dwellings of an ancient race of Indian pygmies, or the Moki (also Moqui). They later realized that the buildings were food storage structures, built by the Anasazi and Fremont Indians, who passed through this area often. The ruins are difficult to distinguish from the cliff face. Center your search for the structures in the alcoves of the cliff face. An interpretive sign and a viewsite are there to help with your search. |
