Shoshone National ForestThis area was set aside by Presidential Proclamation by President Benjamin Harrison in 1891, as the Yellowstone Park Timberland Reserve. This was the first forest land to be designated as a reserve and holds the distinction of being the first National Forest in the U.S.A. Wapiti Ranger Station is located along the highway leading from Cody to Yellowstone Park. It is the oldest and the first ranger station built in the United States. The station gets its name from the Indian word for elk - wapiti. |
