Tannehill State ParkThese 1,500 acres of wooded hills preserve the old Tannehill Ironworks, which operated from 1829 to 1865. A major Confederate munitions supplier during the Civil War, it was destroyed by Union forces in 1865. Several decades later the ironworks ushered in Birmingham's huge steel and iron industry. Highlights include a collection of 19th century farm buildings and farm machinery, the Tannehill Farm, more than 30 relocated pioneer homes, the ruins of the charcoal blast furnaces and an operating gristmill and cotton gin. A museum houses Civil War machinery and artifacts and a miniature 1850s village. A miniature train transports visitors from the furnace and pioneer home area to the farm. |
