Kayenta

John and Louisa Wetherhill established a trading post here in 1910. A nearby spring surrounded by a glue-like clay soil caused livestock to bog down in the mire.

Its name is loosely derived from the Navajo word Teehindeeh, meaning "boghole" or "a natural game pit."
