Picacho Pass

Picacho is a huge pile of volcanic remnants rising several hundred feet about fifty miles northwest of Tucson. It has been a landmark for Indians, Spanish explorers and American frontiersmen.

The Battle of Picacho Pass, on April 15, 1862, was the westernmost conflict of the Civil War and the only one to take place in Arizona. Confederate forces killed Lt. James Barrett, leader of the Union detachment, and two privates, while losing two men themselves.

Aware that Union reinforcements would soon arrive, the Confederates then retreated back down the Butterfield Road to Tucson.
