SuperiorThe opening of the rich silver King Mine in 1875, followed by the development of the Silver Queen Mine brought streams of fortune hunters into this mineral laden region. When the surface silver began to play out, the miners found rich deposits of copper. North of town you will see the high smokestacks of a smelter (no longer in operation), machinery and extensive tailings of the Magma Copper Mine, whose shafts plunge nearly 5,000 ft underground. |
