Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is the largest Alpine lake in North America, and the third largest over all. IT is 12 miles wide, 22 miles long and holds over 40 trillion gallons of water. That's enough to cover the entire state of California to a depth of 14 inches.

There are two theories about the lake's origins. The first argues that the lake was a huge crater gouged out of the crown of the Sierra Nevadas during the Ice Age. The second puts the lake's beginnings at three million years ago, when volcanic lava hardened, trapping the Tahoe waters in a deep, geological cap.

The Lake Tahoe area was central to the migration of the native Washoe Indians, and later to fortune seekers during the Gold Rush era. The basin became a prime source of wood, and by the turn of the century, summer resorts for the wealthy had begun to develop. In the 1930s, smaller, middle-class lodges began to appear, and in the early 1950s, the gaming industry in Nevada transformed this primarily summer resort into a popular year-round destination.
