Palm SpringsYou'll recognize the fashionable desert resort by the 1,336 windmills along the interstate just outside of town. Palm Springs, with a population of 36,400, lies at the foot of the San Jacinto Peak (10,804 ft). The mineral springs here have attracted visitors for many years, and picturesque setting has been the location for many Hollywood productions. Nationally known tournaments, such as the Bob Hope Desert Classic and the Nabisco Dinah Shore Invitational, are held on Palm Spring's 42 golf courses. There are more than 300 tennis courts in the area, and over 7,000 swimming pools - that's one for every 5 citizens. Bob Hope is the town's honorary mayor, whereas the late congressman, Sonny Bono (of Sonny and Cher fame) was a former one. |
