Pismo BeachPismo Beach is perhaps best known for its namesake mollusk, the Pismo clam. The Spanish pismo means "a place to fish," but the Chumash pismu means "a place where blobs of tar wash up on the beach." (Since good fishing is a historical fact and, in the absence of major coastal oil spills, beach tar from here to Santa Barbara is a natural phenomenon, take your pick.) At one time the clams were so plentiful that 45,000 could be commercially harvested in a single day. Decades of unrestricted clamming have resulted in strict limits that now protect the vastly depleted supply. |
