San SimeonThe "town" of San Simeon is actually two tiny towns: the original Spanish-style, red-tile-roofed village built for Hearst employees and "San Simeon Acres," the highway's motel row. Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument contains the castle, guest houses and 137 acres of the estate of William Randolph Hearst. The grounds and dwellings occupy La Cuesta Encantada (The Enchanted Hill, a 1,600 foot mountain overlooking San Simeon and the Pacific Ocean. The main residence is a huge Hispano-Moorish building called La Casa Grande, where millions of dollars worth of Hearst's art collection and antiques are displayed. Construction was begun by William Randolph Hearst in 1919. Even though he continues to build for the next 28 years, he still had not completed La Cuesta Encantada at his death in 1951. |
