Cortez

Cortez was first settled by non-Indians in 1885, when a group of farmers arrived in the area with plans to irrigate crops with water from the Dolores River.

Within a year, the Mitchell Springs Project was pumping water from the river into nearby fields, and in 1887 the town of Cortez was officially founded.
