TallahasseeTallahassee became the site of Florida's government headquarters in 1823, 2 years after the territory became part of the United States. A convention in 1861 declared Florida as and independent nation and member of the Confederate States of America. Floridians repelled a Federal force at the Battle of Natural Bridge to protect Tallahassee, making it the only uncaptured Confederate capital east of the Mississippi. |
