Montpelier

Montpelier stands as the first Idaho settlement along the Oregon Trail - the post office here has been in operation since 1873. Mormons were the first settlers here, and history tells us that Brigham Young himself chose the name for the capital of Vermont, his home state.

Young and the church had a "feed them, don't fight them" philosophy with the Shoshone and Bannock Indians who had traditionally used the valley. After the valley had been scouted and found suitable for farming, elders of the church met with Bannock Chief Tighi and Shoshone Chief Washakie to arrange the pact that would allow both groups to live peaceably.

In 1863 the first settlers chose a spot along Paris Creek for their homes. The Indians were to have the south end of Bear Lake, and the settlers agreed to share their crops with them.

On the afternoon of August 13, 1896 the bank was robbed of more than $7,000 by Bob Weeks, Butch Cassidy, and Elza Lay. Weeks was caught, and told the authorities that they held up the bank to raise money to hire a lawyer for another member of the Wild Bunch, Matt Warner, who faced murder charges in Utah.
