RockfordBisected by the Rock River, Rockford in named for the shallow ford used by the Galena-Chicago Stagecoach line before the area was settled by New Englanders. Industry began here with a small sawmill and has grown steadily since. In the 1850s John H. Manny invented and produced a combination reaper and mower that revolutionized the agricultural output of the state. |
