Battle CreekBattle Creek, Michigan is the breakfast food capital of the nation. Kellogg's, Post Cereal, and Ralston Purina are all located here. The cereal revolution started in the kitchen of the Battle Creek Sanitarium, where two brothers named Kellogg developed a flaked cereal in 1894. Battle Creek was also the home of Sojourner Truth, an ex-slave who spoke for the abolitionist cause. The town also served as a station on the underground railroad, which was a network of people who believed in the abolition of slavery and helped runaway slaves come to the north. Some runaways had to go as far as Canada, as U.S. laws allowed slave owners or their agents to round up escaped slaves and return them to their owners. |
