KalamazooThe name Kalamazoo comes from an Indian word for "place where the water boils," because of the springs which bubble up in the nearby riverbed. In May of 1988 it was finally revealed to the American public, by the Weekly World News, that "after faking his tragic death (in 1977) exhausted idol Elvis Presley was secretly flown to Hawaii, where he began his new life under the name John Burrows." And even more shocking, he had spent at least part of those past eleven years in Kalamazoo, Michigan! Louise Welling, a 51 year-old Kalamazoo housewife, claimed that she had seen Elvis twice: in September she had gone to Felpausch's Grocery Store in suburban Vicksburg, Michigan, after church and had spotted him in the next check-out lane. He was buying a fuse. "He was dressed in an all-white jumpsuit and holding a motorcycle helmet," she said. "He's lost weight and didn't have sideburns." She spotted him a second time two months later at the J.C. Penny entrance of the Crossroads Mall. And in May her children saw the King at a Burger King drive-through window. (3015 Westnedge Ave.) Kalamazoo is also the home of Upjon, a major pharmaceutical company (which would explain what Elvis was doing here) and Western Michigan University, with nearly 19,000 students. |
