ElkoElko has been called the last authentic cow town in America. It is the center of commerce and government for northeastern Nevada. It is also home of the annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering, held each January. Elko's National Basque festival, held every 4th of July weekend, features a colorful parade, traditional Basque dancing and yelling competition, handball tournaments, and authentic Basque food. There is a heavy concentration of basque settlers here because many sheep and cattle ranches employed shepherds and hands from the Basque region of northern Spain. |
