Espanola was founded in 1598 by the Spaniards as the first capital of New Mexico. The town assumed its present role as a trading and distribution center when the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad built it "Chili Line" between Espanola and Antonito, Colorado, in the late 1870s.
Today Espanola is has a reputation as the "low rider capital of New Mexico."
