The capital of Rio Arriba County, Tierra Amarilla ("Yellow Land") lies in a large valley against the northern slope of the San Juan Mountains.
Home to Utes and Jicarilla Apaches in the 18th and 19th centuries, the area was also home to a number of Spanish farmers, who first moved to the valley in 1832 after Spain granted land here to Juan Martinez.
