As you have probably guessed from the billboards, if you've ever had the opportunity to drive across South Dakota, Mitchell's claim to fame is the World's Only Corn Palace.
This truly unique attraction dates back from 1892. It was originally built to encourage settlement and to prove the richness of the soil of Eastern South Dakota. The building is decorated inside and out with native corn, grains, and grasses of natural color. The outside decorations are changed every year requiring 2,000 to 3,000 bushels of materials. The Corn Palace is, without a doubt, the world's only Byzantine structure decorated with murals and designs using corn - a true tribute to midwestern "corn." (It has been rebuilt twice.)
