Sioux Falls is South Dakota's largest city, and has population of over 100,000. The falls, which give the town its name, were described by Jean Nicollet in 1839, when he was sent on a trip by the Canadian government to explore the area. The town was officially established in 1857, although it was deserted between 1862 and 1865 because of Indian troubles.
Today, Sioux Falls if a meatpacking and trading center. Its stockyards are the largest in the U.S.A.
