Founded in Cherokee territory in 1785, Sevierville was named for John Sever, who later became Tennessee's first governor. Sevier negotiated a treaty with the Indians who ceded the land between the French Broad River and the ridge separating the Little Tennessee and Little rivers to white settlers.
