Each year people attempt to make history near Wendover, Nevada at the Bonneville Salt Flats. What began in 1911 with W.D. Rishel driving a Packard at 50 incredible miles per hour, has progressed to today's drivers reaching for 1,000 mph in jet powered cars. The measured mile is part of a 14 mile track to allow room for acceleration and deceleration of the jet powered vehicles (via drag chutes). The timing is done twice, once in each direction, and averaged to correct for any wind influence on the results.
