This agricultural community, a few miles north of Mt. Carmel Junction, was first settled in 1865 as Winsor. Threats by Navajo and Paiute Indians forced its abandonment a year later and it wasn't reestablished until 1871, when it was named Mt. Carmel for a mountain in Palestine.
