ORDERVILLE, UT
Residents here began a communal life in 1875 as part of the Mormon United Order. Everyone worked in cooperative farms and industries, divided income according to need, shared meals at a common table, and met twice daily for worship. The experiment succeeded admirably for about 10 years, longer than any other Mormon town. a combination of internal disagreements and external pressures eventually convinced community leaders to end the United Order and return its property to private ownership.
