SAN RAFAEL SWELL
This massive fold and uplift of the earth's crust is crossed by I-70 about 19 miles west of Green River. The east face and "flat irons" of the Swell, known as the San Rafael Reef, rise 2,100 feet above the desert. San Rafael Swell is 80 miles long (north to south) and 30 miles wide. This little known region has a rich history of outlaws, ranchers, and miners.
