Valuable lead and salt mines made Wytheville important to both sides during the Civil War. One attempt by Union troops to take the town was stopped by Molly Tynes, after she rode 40 miles over mountains to alert the home guard to come to its defense. Today the town is a transportation and vacation center between the Blue Ridges and Alleghenies.
