The land around Greybull was first settled in the 1880s by stockmen, with several hundred Mormon homesteaders moving in a decade later to dig irrigation ditches.

The word Greybull comes from a huge albino buffalo that once roamed this country. The animal was sacred to the Indians, who noted it by pictographs that are on the sandstone bluffs along the river.
