East Central University Theatre presents a production of “The Laramie Project” in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center April 16-18 at 7:30 p.m.
“The Laramie Project” outlines the tragic murder of a 21-year-old Laramie, Wyoming resident in October 1998. Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die tied to a fence because he was gay. He was found the next day but died several days later in an area hospital.
The brutal hate crime caught the attention of Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project, who went on to make six trips to Laramie during the year-and-a-half-long trial of the two young men accused of killing Shepard. They conducted more than 200 interviews with townspeople, some of whom were directly connected and others citizens of Laramie. Reactions to the crime offer a unique sociological perspective that will leave you thinking.
