Warhol: The Athletes

at Oklahoma City Museum of Art

Warhol: The Athletes is a series of ten portraits of famous athletes commissioned by Andy Warhol’s friend and collector Richard Weisman. Check out portraits in Warhol's unique style of such famous athletes as NBA all-time scoring leader Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, golfing great Jack Nicklaus, figure-skating Olympic gold medalist Dorothy Hamill, boxing icon Muhammad Ali, and the infamous O. J. Simpson, among others.

To create the series, Warhol started by creating Polaroids that he shot in his Manhattan studio or in the athletes’ homes. Then, using his signature screen-printing technique, he printed the photos on canvas and embellished each of the 40-by-40-inch portraits with acrylic paint.

Oklahoma City Museum of Art members can enjoy a special preview of the exhibit on April 16. See below for a complete schedule.
