In 1962, a group of prominent Oklahomans gathered at the Beacon Club to discuss the idea of forming a theatre company in Oklahoma City. Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma emerged from that meeting, putting on its first three-season show at Oklahoma City University in the summer of 1963.

Today, Lyric has expanded from its modest beginnings to include performances at Civic Center Music Hall and the renovated historic Plaza Theatre. The company also runs Thelma Gaylord Academy, a training program that nurtures budding artistic talent in children of all ages. Through community outreach efforts from its Musical Interactive program, schoolchildren across the state are able to experience the world-class musical theatre talent of Lyric performers.
