When Oklahoma became a state in 1907, Prohibition was accepted as part of the state’s constitution. As national views on prohibition changed, the fight over liquor laws and efforts to control bootlegging remained steady in Oklahoma. As Howard Edmondson and Joe Cannon took office in 1958, the infamous “Cannon raids” began springing up all over the state until Prohibition was repealed in 1959.
Featuring 25 black-and-white photographs taken during the decades-long fight over Prohibition in Oklahoma, “Born Dry” explores the debate over the legality of alcohol sales through historical imagery. See it through November 30, only at the Oklahoma History Center.
