On February 25, Current Studio will end its two-year experiment in art, community and problem solving. More details about the gallery closing is available here.
Current Studio creates conversation about how art benefits the community, and we’re sure glad they do. This experimental, artist-run space was founded by two local artists and curators with a passion for art, community and problem-solving. Current Studio is always free and open to the public!
The studio offers a variety of programs for those looking to delve deeper into Oklahoma City’s creative landscape:
Art-of-the-Month. With membership, each month you’ll receive a fantastic work of art (yours to keep!) by one of Current Studio’s thoughtfully selected artists.
Artist Services. Current Studio offers consulting and other services for artists, ranging from photographing artwork to proposal writing and website review.
Crit Night. Moderated by Chickasaw curator Heather Ahtone (plus a guest curator), Crit Nights take place between exhibitions. Three artists are chosen through a submissions process to bring a new piece of art or a new body of work in progress to Current Studio for presentation and moderated group discussion.
Current Thursdays. During these monthly open houses, Current Studio will be open late and anyone can drop in to see what’s going on.
Eugene Field Elementary. In Current Studio’s Classen Ten Penn neighborhood, the local elementary school was hit hard by state budget cuts and was forced to cut its in-school visual arts program. In response, Current Studio developed a program with guest teaching artists that provides arts education to the school.
Sunday Soup. Sunday Soup is a grassroots model for funding creative projects through community meals (in this case, soup provided by Elemental Coffee). The basic formula is that a group of people come together to share a meal that is sold for an affordable price. All the income from that meal goes toward supporting creative projects.
Next door to Current Studio is a shared studio space, aptly called Next Door Studios, occupied by five artists. Their studio is open to the public during Current Thursdays or by appointment. And of course, Current Studio features a variety of exhibitions! For more information, including when the space is closed for installation, check the calendar here.
